Location guardiola, Sizilien / asansörsüz, Istanbul / Konnoh Hachiman Schrein, Tokio / Malkasten, Düsseldorf / vice versa, Berlin
The Story of Hayy is a project that has been realized step by step at different locations with the participation of numerous artists and musicians. The starting point is the translation of the NUANS publication APOGEE (2011, revolver publishers) into the format of a musical. The fundamental idea of loneliness is based on the text „The philosopher as autodidact" by Ibn Tufail. The protagonist of the novel is Hayy, a little boy who teaches himself the complete knowledge of mankind on a lonely island. NUANS counter this utopian idea with an extensive group project that autodidactically appropriates the complex structure of a musical and implements it in changing contexts. After a few preparatory stops in Amsterdam and Mumbai, the first shooting date in Sicily takes place on the platform “guardiola“. Following the performance in southern Italy, the focus was on the “Self-Taught Musical” developed by the Japanese electronic musician subtle. Parallel to the filming, NUANS organized a Hayy residency on a roof terrace in Istanbul. Here, the invited artists can isolate themselves and at the same time develop works in the heart of the city, which were later included into the storyline of the musical. The last production took place in pure nature on the Dutch border and at the rocket station near Düsseldorf. A presentation of the entire story was organized at Künstlerverein Malkasten Düsseldorf and at vice versa Berlin.
